Poster - Changing the Dynamics of Instruction—Training the Parents and Paraprofessionals - Confirmed
Casey Robertson
In many cases, the Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments (TVI) is the only professional on a student’s team with expertise in Braille. As a result, students often struggle to practice reading when the TVI is not present, receiving minimal support outside of dedicated Braille instruction time. Providing training for paraprofessionals and parents equips them with the necessary skills to reinforce literacy beyond formal lessons, ultimately improving literacy outcomes. When additional team members, including staff and parents, develop confidence in supporting Braille literacy, they can effectively guide, encourage, and reinforce the student’s learning.
